There were “Indian schools” all over america up through the early 1900’s. iirc, jim thorpe attended one?

Yes indeed! The Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pa. now the Army War College.

I recommend "Jim Thorpe--All American" to all and sundry. His time at Carlisle under coach Pop Warner figures prominently.

(Thorpe and his teammates keep returning to Easton, Pa. to beat Lafayette's ass. That's hard on this 'Pard.)
