That was attempted first degree murder.In my State it would more likely be second if the victim were dead. First implies premeditation, which requires a plan, rather than just a lack of self control.

There is a
federal crime of Attempted Murder.
It is not clear all states have "attempted murder" as a separate charge.
Many states have the generic "attempt" moniker which can be used to modify many crimes.
