I was in Shanghai in 2010 when this happened. 53 people died. The articles about this typically say that the building was ‘under construction’.... sure. What really happened was that the outside of the building was being renovated and it mainly involved styrofoam covering on the outside and new windows. Before the covering was put on the insulation, it got set alight... I think it was a welding spark at the bottom. Regardless, it turned the entire building into a massive torch almost instantly. Amazing that more people didn’t get burned to death.
Last year or year before an apartment building in London caught fire in the same manner.
Can’t tell from the fire picture, but I was in Hong Kong in the mid 60s and the scaffolding used was bamboo. Don’t recall how high the buildings with scaffolding were, but they were more than 10 stories.
