There was an article a while back about how Israel developed a cost effective solution to Desalinization.

Part of that story from 5-6 years ago included the recent (at that time) discovery of massive natural gas deposits found in the Negev (southern region). They plan to use this essentially free energy to revitalize the desert regions with irrigation of fresh water.
