LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday that his barn has been told Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drug test, the latest doping scandal for horse racing and arguably the sport’s premier trainer.

Flanked by his attorney Craig Robertson in a morning news conference at Churchill Downs on Sunday, Baffert said Medina Spirit was found to have 21 picograms of the steroid betamethasone, double the legal threshold in Kentucky racing, in a postrace sample.

“I just hope the FBI doesn’t find a noose in Medina Spirit’s stall.”

Holy crap. I had NO IDEA that Medina Spirit was an Equine Supremacist. This crap has to end, AND NOW. We need to PURGE our society of this hate-filled horse, and NOW!

It was not white, so all bets are off. No pun intended.

The question is, did the jockey have his knee on the horses neck, for the whole race? If so, arrest him and wrongly convict him, in the name of wokeness.

It is 21 trillionths of a gram. What is that? Four molecules??? Ridiculous.

Baffert's Gamine, who won easily earlier on Derby Day in the Derby City Distaff, had been dq'd for the exact same steroid -- betamethasone -- from her 3rd in the COVID-delayed Kentucky Oaks last September.

"Craig Robertson, Baffert’s lawyer, said in a previous statement that Gamine was administered betamethasone 18 days prior to the Oaks."

So Baffert's excuses don't hold any merit whatsoever.

To keep Medina Spirit from running, Maryland and New York would have to enjoin the owners Zedan Racing from running Medina Spirit without the benefit of the official ruling from the Kentucky Racing Commission, because the post-race split sample won't be returned -- despite surely confirming the positive result -- for another 3 weeks.

But he is a good boy, he was going to win the Triple Crown and then go to medical school! This is prejudice and anti-Muslim prejudice because he is owned by a BIPOC Muslim.

It's WAY worse than that. Millionths would be micrograms. Picograms is trillionths of a gram. (Billionths would be nano). There's probably trillionths of a gram from the wind blowing over the poop of some other house that took it.

A millionth of a millionth of a gram. And it already takes 28 grams to make one ounce.

O, irony, thou are the light of Schadenfreude.

When Jason Servis was wrapped up by the Feds for allegedly doping horses, the West's transferred their Maximum Security (the wrongfully-DQ'd 2019 Derby winner) from Servis' barn to ... Bob Baffert. Where he won 2 and lost 2, and is now out to stud at Ashford.

BREAKING: Baffert suspended from Churchill Downs an hour ago

"It is our understanding that Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit’s post-race blood sample indicated a violation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s equine medication protocols. The connections of Medina Spirit have the right to request a test of a split sample and we understand they intend to do so. To be clear, if the findings are upheld, Medina Spirit’s results in the Kentucky Derby will be invalidated and Mandaloun will be declared the winner.

Failure to comply with the rules and medication protocols jeopardizes the safety of the horses and jockeys, the integrity of our sport and the reputation of the Kentucky Derby and all who participate. Churchill Downs will not tolerate it. Given the seriousness of the alleged offense, Churchill Downs will immediately suspend Bob Baffert, the trainer of Medina Spirit, from entering any horses at Churchill Downs Racetrack. We will await the conclusion of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commissions’ investigation before taking further steps."

Poor horse, it started with codeine cough syrup, worked its way up to pot and when old enough to perform, the dude was addicted....

The track and OTB may have to ‘honor’ the tickets when presented, but I can see some ‘street’ bookies wanting to try and get their payouts back....

I would think that it would be near impossible to get near that horse.

This totally insane. To test for trillions of X would require the horse and all around it live/train/run in the equivalent of an Intel chip fabrication clean room.

Baffert seemed genuinely surprised that his horse won.

This has changed with Churchill Downs suspension of Bob Baffert in the past hour -- all Pimlico and NYRA would have to do is reciprocate Baffert's suspension, rather than instantiate their own suspension of Baffert or enjoin Zedan Racing.

The fat is in the fire.

I bet that in 5 years Barry Bonds will be inducted into the BBHoF and he will arrive at the ceremony riding Medina Spirit and riding his Trek bike alongside will be Lance Armstrong. Democrats will cheer.

Question: does suspending the trainer mean the horse can’t run?
