Maricopa County Officials Refusing to Turn Over Routers to Auditors (What are they afraid of?)

Officials in Maricopa County, Arizona, are refusing to comply with subpoenas from the state Senate that require them to turn over routers or router images to auditors reviewing the November 2020 election, saying that surrendering the items will cause a "significant security risk" to local law enforcement.

"We had previously believed that the risk would be eliminated by redacting the law enforcement data on the routers and not producing it. But we were informed that redaction did not eliminate the risk," Deputy County Attorney Joseph LaRue said in a letter this week to Senate Audit Liaison Ken Bennett, reports The Arizona Daily Independent. "We also learned that if criminal elements or others gained access to this data, it might compromise county and federal law enforcement efforts and put the lives of law enforcement personnel at risk."

LaRue's letter was prompted after Bennett this week told KFYI, a local talk radio station in Phoenix, that the county's officials were not in compliance with the subpoenas, which were signed by Senate President Karen Fann and Senate Judiciary Chair Warren Petersen and ruled valid by a judge in February.

The hardest part about keeping a secret and lying is maintaining the secret and the lie.

What's this ass-clown talking about? The routers have been in the possession of "criminal elements" since November.

Why would law enforcement be in danger? Were they participating in the fraud? How could discovery of what's on the routers compromise county and federal law enforcement efforts? There will never be any law enforcement efforts regarding any aspect of the election because the Deep State says it was all on the up-and-up.

The level to which they are fighting this is completely troubling. It’s really unbelievable. They are scared.

I’m assuming there are a LOT of ChiCom IP addresses logged.

Isn’t IOS XE limited to the ASR 9000 series?

I doubt Maricopa is running those.

I agree with this. We may not be able to get ALL the traffic header/log information for Nov 3,4 but all they need is ANY|ONE piece of illegal access. THEN the ‘clean as the wind-driven snow’ (as Rushbo used to say) - goes out the window. THEN they can tack it on the wall as one more piece of a chain of evidence of wrongdoing. Build the case. Use EVERYTHING to do it.

ONE receipt in the garbage could be the missing link in the chain and be enough for the Feds to bring down a mobster.

"Isn’t IOS XE limited to the ASR 9000 series?"

No, you're thinking of IOS-XR. IOS-XE runs on just about everything now, from routers and switches, down to the access points. The switches (minus the 9200s) and routers can run LXC containers. And that's just the Cisco world.

Even some platforms running DD-WRT can run docker containers now. With MCUs in everything now (ok, maybe not toothbrushes -- yet), anything that touches the network is a potential "computer". I have a $5 ESP32 MCU sitting here on my desk running my own micropython code that can connect via bluetooth or wifi. It's a little bigger than my thumbnail and can run off a LiPo battery at 3.3v. Security-minded folks MUST keep these vectors in mind.

You are assuming the logs didn’t rotate out or weren’t simply wiped or logging was disabled. Whoever was behind this operation was probably smart enough not to leave such forensic data. I’m been in the field for 25 years, mostly deep diving kernel plumbing on Linux and Unix; which is what all these devices run on. Anyone who was able to pull off such massive fraud should be able to clear their crumbs. The pols are morons when it comes to IT. But they know what they did, they are freaking out, but they don’t understand the details. Their seditious or state-sponsored (China) friends could easily mask MACs/IPs/routing by hopping though multiple proxies with spoofed IPs (similar to frequency hopping encrypted radios). Their IT people, whoever helped these morons pull of stealing this election, are probably telling them to calm the hell down in faraday caged non-US SCIFs in northern VA somewhere.

Your post causes me to believe even more strongly how important it is to gain copies of all the router logs and config files.

If copies still exist on back-ups somewhere. Regrettably, log servers are not often backed up. They are usually overwritten every 30 days with the news of the moment.

It’s also likely any little app running under a LXC container would be gone as well.

But it’s also unlikely routers were used to alter an application and database. They should start there and look outward.

Look at THOSE connection histories, which they have to back up and preserve for several years, by law.

Agree with your points. I’m certainly not hopeful they’ll find anything on the routers, but they need to look everywhere. Sometimes the smallest detail will steer them down a path they didn’t consider.

Actually, I’m not hopeful they’ll even get the routers to look at. If I’m being honest with myself, I’m not even hopeful this will entire process end in the truth. (But kudos to them for not giving up!)

The distraction part is primarily people in this forum who think because Maricopa County must be hiding something because they won’t turn them over, you’ve seen the comments, basically if we could just get the routers we could see who illegally accessed the network and changed the votes, when in reality it’s likely to show nothing
