I particularly like the Guinea. The Guinea was 21 shillings, while a pound was 20. Auctions were conducted in Guineas, with the consigner receiving the bid price in pounds, the auctioneer keeping the extra shilling. Professional fees, like doctors and lawyers were priced in Guineas. The terms comes from the Guinea pounds of the 18th century, made in British Guinea, that consisted of exceptionally fine gold.
