Just shoot me again...they split my request to 2 different areas - after a year.
I get one response back from one area almost 4 years later.

RE: JMD FOIA #555555
Dear Mr. XXXXX,
I am responding on behalf of the Justice Management Division (JMD) to your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request dated August 7, 2017, that you initially submitted to the Office of Information Policy (OIP). OIP forwarded to JMD the portion of your request seeking a detailed review of ethics and conflicts of interest made on behalf of Special Counsel Robert Mueller. We understand the portion relating to the background investigation was forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We apologize for the delay in our response
...
Some predecisional deliberative information has been redacted under FOIA Exemption 5, 5 U.S.C. § 552(b)(5), which covers certain inter- and intra-agency communications protected by the deliberative process privilege.

I haven't even looked at what they sent me yet...

sorry for the verbosity

Well, they didn't dig too deep to see if there were any ethics and conflicts of interest for Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

This gets interesting but doesn't really mean much.

On May 8, 2017 - Pres. Trump asked Sessions and Rosenstein to make a case against FBI Director James Comey in writing.
On May 9, 2017 - Rosenstein hands his famous Comey memo to Sessions. It is the basis for the firing of Comey.

From my FOIA request:
Scott Schools, ADAG, was appointed by Rod Rosenstein on 05/09/2017 to do the background check on Mueller.

(Schools refers to Rosenstein as Deputy AG for 05/09/2017, then refers to Rosenstein as "Acting AG"(Which is how Rosenstein signed the Special Counsel order for 05/17/2017)

Mueller met with President Trump May 16, 2017.
Rosenstein appoints Mueller Special Counsel 05/17/2017.(Ethics investigation wasn't officially completed)

Cynthia K Shaw, Director, Dept. of Ethics, gave her written report to Schools 05/18/2017. (She found Mueller's law firm represented an (unnamed) individual who was involved in the investigation.)
Schools gave his written report to Rosenstein 05/19/2017.

Now, other than that, both Schools and Shaw cited Mueller's extensive exemplary background and neither felt it was necessary to dig deeper.

"Some predecisional deliberative information has been redacted under FOIA Exemption 5, 5 U.S.C. § 552(b)(5), which covers certain inter- and intra-agency communications protected by the deliberative process privilege."

I tried to remove the redaction but no such luck.
