We are expecting our first grandchild and I keep getting the question about what I want to be called. My husband is papa with my daughter’s dog, lol. They live with us and he is affectionately called the beast because of his size. So that will probably continue.
I’m from the south and all our grandmas were Meemaw, Nana, MawMaw etcetera but hubby says no, no, no to any of those. My sister is MiMi to her grandkids.
My DIL’s mother, who is from Brazil, will be called by the Portuguese word for grandma, Avo.
I can’t believe how much pressure there is to be called some cutsey name. Grandma is fine for me but everyone says no that’s old fashioned.
My southern cousin called our grandmother granny.

Exactly. My paternal grandmother and great-grandmothers on both sides - all deceased - were called ‘Granny.’ That suits me just fine. In my husband’s family, all female grandparents were called Mommaw and last name, i.e. Mommaw Ayers or Mommaw Brown. I did not feel right usurping the grandmotherly name of a living person. Hence, I am Granny. (My mug-club pint at the local brewery is imprinted with Gran^2y Lyn^2. 😂)

Grandma and Grandpa name slide....
We are Nana and Papa. And it’s great because it distinguishes us from the cranky grandparents who are Grandma and Grandpa.
Once I got a call from dil, her car wouldn’t start would I go pick up J from preschool. Preschool teacher told J that “grandma” was picking him up. She said he just slumped.
Then he saw my car and told teacher “It’s not GRANDMA!!! It’s NANA!! NANA’S COME TO PICK ME UP.” 😁
My sister is Grammy. Jvette sounds French lol.. what about Mamie? Or Grandma 😂??
Oh and congratulations on the upcoming birth of your grandchild!! So exciting!

When my granddaughter was first saying words, I pointed to my wife and said grandma - it came out meema.
I pointed to me and said grandpa - it came out peepa.
That’s where it’s at today.
