"Roundabout" is a song by the English progressive rock band Yes from their fourth studio album Fragile, released in November 1971. It was written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe and produced by the band and Eddy Offord. The song originated when the band were on tour and travelled from Aberdeen to Glasgow, and went through many roundabouts on the way.

“No. 2 is Frank Zappa”

I saw Frank perform 5 times. Hands down one of the greatest guitar players of all time as well as an absolutely brilliant composer.

“Watermelon In Easter Hay” is easily one of the finest guitar solos ever recorded.

The first time I heard it, I thought for sure it was David Gilmour.

“With Elton and Bernie, Bernie wrote lyrics and Elton wrote music.”

In my opinion EJ’s music went downhill after they split. I did see him perform one time at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago years ago. No flashy costumes and no band. Just Sir Elton in a tuxedo, a Grand Piano, and someone playing what seemed to be every percussion instrument known to man.

He played for 4 hours with a fifteen minute intermission. It was one of the top 3 best shows I’ve ever seen.

There is a bit of that vibe to it. But as good as Gilmour is, Zappa was far, far better.

Frank was unique. Even he admitted he was a one-dimensional player. But Frank’s solos were snowflakes, no two were the same.

We were, of course, blown away by their musicianship. But we still considered them a little “light in the loafers” compared to the “real rockers.” Took a while for me to come to a full appreciation of them.

Check out Les Paul and Steve Howe on Youtube. Howe is an absolutely amazing guitarist.

“Even he admitted he was a one-dimensional player.”

He did at that. IMO his tue genius was in composing. I actually met him once very, very briefly outside the WXRT studio in Chicago. It was cold and blowing sleet. A friend and I stood outside waiting for over an hour freezing our asses off.

Eventually a limo pulled up and out came Frank. I was wearing a t shirt I’d bought at a show he’d done at the Uptown Theater. He took a look at us for a moment and said “Well, if you’re crazy enough to stand out here in this weather I’m crazy enough to talk to you for a minute.”

I was so stunned I forgot to ask for an autograph.

Nice! I’m not the only Dream Theater fan here. :) Have to admit, though, that I haven’t bought any of their albums since Portnoy left.

Honestly, I think they have improved without him. Portnoy was taking Dream Theater in a very one-dimensional metal direction - their songs have become more progressive and interesting again since the extraordinarily talented Mike Mangini came in.

Esquire’s debut album sounds like a Drama-esque Yes album (to me) thanks to Chris Squire’s participation and backing vocals.

My understanding is that Esquire was supposed to Nikki Squire’s act and not just a Yes-clone. Yeah, well... Take the boost if it helps!
