A 73-year-old grandmother of nine was picking wildflowers on the side of the road in Loveland, Colorado, last summer when a local cop got out of his patrol vehicle and told her to stop—beginning a police encounter that ultimately left her with broken bones, bruised, and traumatized.
Loveland Police Officer Austin Hopp had been driving behind Karen Garner with his overhead lights on because she was accused of shoplifting from a nearby Walmart. But Garner did not appear to notice, according to body camera footage published by Garner’s attorney Wednesday.
Garner has dementia and sensory aphasia, an inability to understand spoken and written speech, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed on her behalf this week against the city of Loveland and three officers involved in Garner’s arrest.
Hopp asked Garner why she didn’t stop after he activated his lights and siren, at which point Garner gave him a blank expression, said something unintelligible, and started to move away.
“No, no, no,” Hopp said, according to bodycam footage.
Hopp then grabbed the 80-pound woman, threw her to the grass, and twisted her arms behind her back, bodycam footage shows. Garner was still clutching a handful of wildflowers. A second cop, Daria Jalali, arrived within minutes and assisted in the arrest.
Then, despite Garner’s evident distress and small stature, Hopp pushed her left arm “painfully upward,” according to body camera footage and the lawsuit. Police repeatedly threw her on the ground, and hog-tied her on the side of the road—a controversial restraint that’s been banned by some police departments.(snip)
“I’m going home,” Garner cried repeatedly.
As a result of the incident, Garner was left with a dislocated shoulder, a fractured humerus bone, and a sprained wrist, the lawsuit alleges. She was covered with bruises by the time she arrived at

You grab her arm and cuff her.
What’s hard about that with an older 80 pound lady?
My conclusion is that the cop is a piece o shit.
you’re the one tossing insults
we’re done here
I see. So his military service caused him to kneel on that overdosed drug addict’s neck?
You people are only too quick to get all teary-eyed about “our valiant heroes” but really quick to blame our military experience when some genius
fails.
So what armed force did you serve in?
Yeah, but exactly when did you serve your country in uniform?
Just askin’
I think the cop should work for the secret service, Presidential detail.
Johnny Cash - “Just pickin’ flowers.”
She was walking on what appeared to be a well worn path off the highway.
Dementia affects millions of people to one degree or another. There are probably several million people who drive who have some level of dementia. This is certainly no secret.
Oh I think you misunderstood. Only stated fact Chauvin was an MP. But i don’t think his notary experience helped in his case. He used poor judgement. But he doesn’t deserve what happened. I have empathy for him. Does that sound old-fashioned?
Military not notary. AUTO CORRECT.
I did not serve in armed forces. I’m woman. I don’t think women should serve except nursing. They are a distraction. Look at all this sexual harassment and sexual assaults. They are physically weaker. Best tho g is for a woman to stand beside her husband who serves and raise sons who serve imo.
No, better that he body slammed her. Could have shot her by mistake.
Though I didn’t serve our family has been Here a long time. We served in every war since American Revolution and Civil War (both sides). We love our country.
I don’t believe that Chauvin got a fair trial. That’s not to say that he was completely innocent, but it wasn’t justice.
Then we agree.
Our combat units have to be completely focused on the mission and on supporting each other. Any attractions/distractions are corrosive to unit integrity and trust - and it's impossible for 18-21 year olds to avoid attraction and all of its complications if women are added to the mix.
I spent 17 months in combat and I can't imagine the trouble that would have come up if we found ourselves competing for young ladies' affections or worrying about what was happening to our love while on patrol or outpost or night ambush or in the middle of a firefight.
The people pushing this idea have never been in combat, ever.
My family too - Revolution, Civil War, Spanish-American War, both grandfathers in WWI, Father and two uncles in WWII and my younger brother and I in Vietnam.
Not sure if my kids will serve, since I haven't pushed them towards the service. I guess we'll see.
Sir once again we agree. See what can happen when freepers communicate. And thank you for your service!
Oh wow. I have to add we were in Korea and Afghanistan (Marines) to your list.
Their empathy towards the elderly is appauling. Not even asking her name or ascertaining her mental state. Sorry, I support the blue line but these are bad cops. Fire them both.
