I think it was one of you two (I could be wrong) that posted a tweet or maybe news story about the Federal Reserve limiting the amount of cash & coins they’re shipping out to force more use of plastic?
I don’t know if its due to law passed in Illinois or what, but I noticed several merchants adding a surcharge to my bill if I used plastic to pay.
I’ve heard of businesses giving a discount for paying with cash, but this is the first I’ve seen adding on a charge for using a card.
Can’t say whether I posted this story but I do remember reading it.
A local Mexican Restaurant charges a surcharge for card use here but they are the only ones I’ve run across.
I know a business is charged by the bank when plastic is used so they are just recovering the fees.

I have seen some stores around here—usually small businesses— in southern DE won’t take an AMEX card as they charge higher fees than VISA or MC.
I have seen discounts for cash but never a penalty for using plastic.
They can't track our cash purchases and they don't like that.
If you legally purchase a gun or ammo face to face and use cash the audit trail goes away and they don't like that.

That’s been happening in a few places for awhile. They get a charge and pass it on.
