I thought maybe my star Internet research friend might be able to make heads or tails out of this:
Here in Carter County the real estate assessments have gone up through the roof. Between 20 and 30%. Just talk to a friend down the street that works in escrow office, she said her boss said it is state wide. I was trying to figure out why little Carter County needed so much more money. They’re usually good about budgeting and making do. So what’s going on with Tennessee do you think? Why are they getting greedy all of a sudden?
Have you gotten your updated assessment yet?
What’s weird is that our new house went up by 20%. The old house way out in the country only went up by 5%. Looks like the neighbors all around us are up by about 28%.
Well, you’ve got some misinformation there. LOL
The tax assessment was not statewide. State law requires every county to do a countywide revaluation of property on a 4, 5, or 6 year schedule. The state establishes policies and procedures for the county assessors, oversees the work of the counties and listen to property tax appeals. Mine was last revaluated in 2019, so I’m not due yet.
I haven’t received anything about a new tax amount. Can you tell if it’s because of the assessment rate ($ per hundred) being changed, or because the assessed value (worth of property) went up? Another thought is, did you move within the city limits so are now having to pay county AND city property taxes?
