In April 2004, "Mean Girls" was playing in theaters and "Yeah!" by Usher was topping the Billboard music charts.
This spring -- 17 years later -- those cicadas are part of Brood X (ominous as the "X" sounds, it stands for the Roman numeral ten) and for all that time they have been underground eating and growing.
Researchers aren't sure exactly how many will surface, except that it will be in the billions: They estimate the numbers will be at least 1.5 million per acre, which could mean as many as 30 of the creatures covering your average square foot.

They are queer for Southern Oaks and there are a hell lot less of those than last time they emerged. We will see. I don't see any nymphs on mine just yet, and I had 'em fairly bad last time.
So, a liberal lifestyle.
Not surprising they all die out so quickly.
My dog eats them. Bass love them. My nephew eats them. But he is a little weird.
Imagine standing on the lawn and it starts to move, you try to get away but claws are grabbing you and pulling you under....
They need to feed for the next 17 years you know.
They don’t eat. They are there to mate then die. The birds eat so any that they can barely fly.
We have a place in Hawaii. The locals hate the sound of the tree frogs there. I love it. And yeah, they’re loud at night.
