Baltimore will no longer prosecute drug possession, prostitution, low-level crimes

A pandemic experiment in criminal justice reform takes hold in one of America's most violent cities.

A year ago, as the coronavirus began to spread across Maryland, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby stopped prosecuting drug possession, prostitution, minor traffic violations and other low-level offenses, a move aimed at curbing Covid-19's spread behind bars.

That shift — repeated by prosecutors in many other cities — didn’t just reduce jail populations. In Baltimore, nearly all categories of crime have since declined, confirming to Mosby what she and criminal justice experts have argued for years: Crackdowns on quality-of-life crimes are not necessary for stopping more serious crime.

On Friday, Mosby announced that she was making her pandemic experiment permanent, saying Baltimore — for decades notorious for runaway violence and rough policing — had become a case study in criminal justice reform.

In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent, she said. Homicides inched down, though Baltimore still has one of the highest homicide rates among cities nationwide. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found sharp reductions in calls to police complaining about drugs and prostitution, she said.MORE AT LINK

Re the poster, it appears that our national problems are no long soluble through democratic processes as a democracy only functions where there is a rational, moral, law abiding and informed population. Those essential ingredients are no longer there. Just saying.

Considering the source is ABC News, every word should be questioned.

As soon as I saw that the first word that popped into my mind was ‘propaganda’.

Is CARJACKING not a crime, how about kidnapping or Child porn/Child Endangerment? I just a house in Baltimore for $1, should I buy it - or should I buy a Yugo? 😀

In other news, Baltimore will be THE place to leave.

Democrats are attempting to make their hellhole ‘look’ like they have less crime.

Next step is to NOT PROSECUTE MURDERERS... then the murder rate will ‘go down’ too... Make ALL crimes ‘legal’ and these democrat hellholes won’t have any crime at all...

“Oh, wait. There is a third possibility. Maybe city officials are outright lying to us.”

Maybe?

They are liberals. As they say, “Argh, the truth, the truth...it hurts us.”

And they will continue to say and do that until the truth HURTS them.

Imagine the lives of the people who live next door—the place with the blue siding. The houses on both sides are boarded up and one is slated for demolition—someday. And then there’s the little girl getting to grow up there.

Pretty sure this was the plot to an entire season of The Wire. It didn’t end well in the fictitious world and they just did it in one neighborhood, can’t see it ending any better city-wide.

Democratic controlled cities are harmful to children and other living things.

Heck Jesus knew the most famous prostitute and became her best friend.

True, and the rest of the story is that Jesus didn't condone her activities. That's an important part to remember.

If you ever watched “The Wire” you know how “crime rates” work.

The problem with that is that those so called minor victimless crimes attract some very big time unsavory hard core criminals who prey on those involved in such. I expect a rise in criminal activity once it is realized that there are more $$$ to be made because of the hands off stance.

“In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent, she said. “

This reduction could have nothing to do with businesses being shuttered and people basically being held hostage by COVID decrees, could it?

She is an idiot.

Is there anyone left living in Baltimore?!?!

This their demographics:

https://planning.baltimorecity.gov/planning-data

Can’t imagine anyone offering me enough money to move to that area.

And we know those numbers are deceptive. While only 16% have no Hs diploma, we also know that a kid who has only passed 5 classes in his entirety of hs was in the top 1/2 of his. Class...

I say this honestly, and I know I will be called a racist for it.. but if black Americans as a whole were truly serious about changing the tragectory of their race and brothers and sisters, Baltimore would be ground zero to effect that change... and what is it? A damned $h&tshow.

Don’t talk to me about systemic racism, when the places where you have the most if not exclusive control of the system are where they are!!

Baltimore should be a shining beacon, and it a toxic waste
Dump.

Baltimore city officials cannot prosecute drug possession, prostitution, and low-level crimes because they’ve become an integral part of their economy. Without that, what do they have?

Sounds like Baltimore is following in Chicago’s footsteps. Democrats sure do a fine job managing our cities.
