SInce Satan is referred to as a serpent throughout the bible, you gotta wonder why the Pope used a serpent theme in his audience hall.
Iran doesn't have to be the serpent, because maybe anyone who is the embodiement of Satan would fit that bill, but Iran's leadership sure are good contenders.

For Christians, the 'End Times' described in the Bible detail the rise of one who would claim to be the messiah. One who would behead all who would refuse to worship him.(Iran beheads those who won't convert) He will be supported by a False Prophet who leads all faiths of the world to worship him.
So the Serpent is Satan/AntiChrist and he has a side-kick ‘religious leader’ who will gather all religions into a One World Religion (like Pope is trying to do). The Mahdi could be the 'sidekick.
At the 'End Times', the Age of Grace (when redemption is free with repentance/acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice) ends, and the 7 years of the Tribulation begins (then all have to bear suffering without giving in, in order to win redemption). They will have to die rather than accept the mark of the beast on back of the hand/forehead.
The break between the Age of Grace and the 7 years of Tribulation is the Rapture and sudden rise of the serpent to rule the world.
I recall reading something like Iran prior leader, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, 12th Imam. The Iranians really believed he was the one who would elevate the messiah as ruler. They sometimes talked of of nuking Israel. Later, Ahmadinejad, said he could hear the footsteps of the messiah pacing underground where he’s been all this time and he was going to rise soon.
According to the Christian Bible, during the Tribulation, people will not be able to buy or sell without taking ‘the mark’ - so these 'vaccine passports' seem to some like a precursor, soon to be replaced as inconvenient with an scannable InfraRed tattoo or microchip on back of hand/forehead.
Trippy part comes next - supposedly the Serpent (false messiah) can do things 'n stuff that will seem like magic that WILL convince people he’s God - they will NOT doubt it. I'm thinking the magic of technology/AI, but then, I don’t get out much.
