I think that Rush’s production company screwed up by not having & signing a replacement for Rush. I thought they would have approached someone like Buck Sexton or one of the young guys doing radio with a generous salary to ease into Rush’s time slot & continue to collect income.
They tried that. Rush’s guest hosts were essentially auditions for future greatness. The only one who came close to steeping up was Steyn. He’s pretty good, but he’s no Rush.
Meanwhile, they ruined Mark Davis. He went from being a fun & funny local talker with politics on the side to taking himself too seriously and becoming a blowhard.
He should have stuck to monkeys & NFL picks.
Meanwhile, Rush was a one of a kind, once in several generations talent. Much like Johnny Carson, those shoes are too big for anyone to fill. He spent years polishing and perfecting his craft before 1988.
It’s not just about the views, it’s not just about being “correct”. It’s about being entertaining. Rush knew how to entertain an audience, how to make them feel in on the jokes, part of something special. How to make you want to tune in tomorrow.
For someone to pick up that mantle now, they’d have to have started working on it 15 years ago.
