I read Zinn’s ridiculous, childish version of American history and was gratified to read Mary Grabar’s brilliant refutation of it (2020) and McClay’s “Land of Hope” (2020) U.S. history book, hot off the press.
The fact is, inevitable contacts between advanced societies and primitive ones result in conflict. There is little point in casting blame. The newcomers are vastly outnumbered and the indigenous are fiercely territorial. No matter how the story plays out, something’s gotta give.

You are correct, sir. English historian George MacDonald Fraser said something to the effect that when two peoples meet in a howling wilderness, and for some reason they both want it, one of them goes down.
