Hen litter takes a year to break down and needs to get up to 160 in the compost pile, but it is all we use to fertilize our garden. We keep a year old pile for the garden and a newer pile for next year.

But it can stink... I only have 13 birds, I dust the coop with pine shaving every other day and clean the coop once a week. I put lime down, then chips. That keeps the smell down

I figured you’d know more about it than I do. All I know is what some farmer told me when I was a kid. He said the chicken poop was too acidic or something. But I haven’t had any chickens since I left home. Other than Gertrude, I didn’t care for them especially when they peck each other to death. I can’t eat runny yolk and if I eat chicken it has to be spiced up so it doesn’t taste chickeny.
