If you don’t plan on raising baby chicks, no need for a rooster! I go long stretches without one, just have them from time to time to build our flock.
We have a fox who was picking off our roosters but he hasn’t come around since the rooster came into his own. So it’s a trade-off.
Sometimes we kept them until they got to a certain age (before they get mean) then raised another from a chick and butchered the older one for meat

Sounds like not many roosters get to live to old age. I always wonder what happens to them. Raised for meat?
