Interesting. In my Concordance (The Eerdman’s Bible Commentary. “One of the best conservative evangelical....” from 1953 (rev. 1970):
They describe the “sons of god” in Genesis as princes of kings that worshipped various deities and the kings took on those deities names.
However, the same concordance says the “sons of god” described in Job are the angels, including Satan.
For Jude 6:7 the commentary talks about the angels behaving in a way inconsistent with their calling. But also refers back to Genesis 6:1, and that it was the angels sin that led them to try to settle on earth.
They also mention that Jude had knowledge of the apocryphal books that told the story of the angels and humans more “elaborately”.
Of course we can’t blame the flood or sin just on the fallen angels. After Noah was on dry ground:
GN 8:20-21: Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though a every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
Note also that God doesn’t say anything about fallen angels here either? (No need to mention them as they are all bound up??? Or - they weren’t the issue?)
The key to understanding this puzzle is real simple. Yes, the translation of Job into English is correct. The Sons of God, anywhere mentioned, are spiritual entities, not ones made of DNA. But that does not include Satan or disobedient angels fallen with him.
That is the core of the correct interpretation of them as described in Job and elsewhere in the Bible. Sons of God are those beings who through utter complete irreversible trust in The God place all their trust in Him and His Anointed One, and from this position of faith are given the power to overcome Sin as a master and obey His commandments. In life through God's foresight, receive the title of the condition and place of residence planned for their spirit after physical death.
The OT is full of such saints, starting with Adam and Eve and Abel, who was murdered by his evil-minded brother Cain. This preference was conferred on the godly descendants of Seth, who became the human "Sons of God," saved by faith, to whom God progressively revealed Himself and His plan of saving them from perdition. This progressive special revelation was provided to humans both through unfallen obedient angel messengers and through God's chosen prophets who were guided by the Holy Spirit.
Jehovah Elohim continued this plan of redemption through faith in Him and His word up to and through Jesus' appointment with substitutionary death at Calvary.
Now you know who the Sons of God were as recorded in the pre-Crucifixion division of time. But going back, who then were the sons and daughters of men? Well, they were the descendants of Cain, the human who remained disobedient to God and followed their own counsel and that of the Devil, not of God or His Spirit. They were the humans born after the Fall of Adam, with the sinfulness of their fathers and mothers incorporated in every cell that derived from the recombination of their parents' DNA to produce offspring. I believe these children were brought up to continue wilful ignorance of, and resistant to, the Will of God, and thus became also children of the Devil, as described Jesus:
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. . . .and also by the Apostle Paul:
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him (Jn. 8:42,44 AV)
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;What this all means is that in Genesis 6, the Sons of God were descendants of Seth, meant to be trained to live for God but distracted by the attractions of the daughters of men, descendants of Cain, influenced to remain disobedient o the Creator and live an ungodly enticing life.
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others (Eph. 2:1-3 AV)
It was from such unions that men of great repute (not necessarily in physical stature), of great renown, great leaders of the pre-Flood civilization, but leading fellow humans into unacceptable wickedness of body and mind. So God wiped them out, and started again with Noah and his family. That continued for more than a couple thousand years until the time of Jesus, God come in the flesh, who made it possible for humans that believed in Him to be Spiritually reborn, so that a new spiritual person could come into being coexistig within the body of flesh still occupied by the "old man" of sinful nature. Such new beings are also spiritual in nature and set apart for fellowship with God, and thus have become, by faith in His Beloved Son, His children, for all eternity. So they also have the title "Sons of God." But mark this: it is His Will that being born again, they are not to seek narital union with anyone who is not yet born again, who is still and from physical birth have been, children of man, children of the god of this world, not yet children of God.
