Hillary healthcare parodies. Extremely Funny stuff! Most of my life I expected to turn the radio on and find Rush there. Now he is gone and the loss is so profound that I don’t know what the future will be like for conservatives and American ideals in the future.
There’s simply no one who has that passion for carrying that banner. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say that without a doubt that there’s plenty of people who do. But all I can say is that I am listening for the next icon of democracy. Trump is more the avatar of the fighting spirit, but Rush has for so long echoed the heart, mind, and lungs of conservative voices.
The first time I ever listened to Rush’s show it was in the fall of 1991, and Bob Dornan was guest hosting on a Friday because I think Rush was doing an appearance in his Rush to Excellence Tour. I knew B-1 Bob, but had no clue who Rush Limbaugh was. I didn’t listen again to Rush’s show until April or May of 1992. I think it was the show where Rush “endorsed” Ross Perot over old man Bush, but then denied that he had done it. All I remember was Dittoheads were calling in mad as hell at Rush, but he denied to each caller that he said it. I thought it was hilarious. After that day I started listening for good.
Another story I remember was when he had a heart-to-heart conversation with the head of CBS — was it Sumner Redstone? — when he was thinking about suing CBS over something, I don't remember what. It was interesting to hear his take on the conversation, about which he seemed to be very open.
Also some of his stories about being in the upper-level social circles of NYC for a while, before he realized that they were just using him.
I found Rush’s TV show to be too slow in the progress of content.
The radio show had a relatively slow content pace but was very entertaining. I’m now at a deep loss for weekday afternoon entertainment.
What were some of his other “update” songs? I recall “Up up and away in my beautiful balloon” (condom update), what were some others? Rush really went away from these updates (remember the trumpet announcements) over the years, but these really were part of his allure in the early years.
There’s simply no one who has that passion for carrying that bannerHAMMER.....
Driving from the D.C. area (a Rush free zone) to a new life in New Mexico. In Oklahoma I picked up a station with this guy doing a parody about the House banking scandal. Life was never the same after that.
He used to talk about leaving tv. He did not like the forced structure. On radio he has control of time and pace, with flexibility. He could speak more contemporaneously. TV has to be planned almost to the second. The show was incredible. He just didn’t have the same passion.
Current Services Baseline Budgeting. I couldn’t believe it when he explained it. I’m a lot more jaded now.
Also that the “Social Security Trust Fund” was, by law, invested exclusively in Treasuries.
One of the best calls was a guy from Chicago who took an alligator
to elementary schools and the kids would ride on it.
Rush though the guy was joking and then found he had a web site...and it had pictures...a really great segment
I loved B1 Bob. The only republican that could out talk a ‘rat.
I have one of those ties that he was selling in that era. I think his girl friend at the time was designing them. Very colorful and wide.
I have been racking my brain all day. Who was the congressman who bad mouthed Rush and then I heard him calling in on air to grovel out an apology? First class moron whoever he was.
I had totally forgotten about Bob - I like some of the fill-ins he has had over the last few years, but Bob was hard to beat.
I LOVED Paul Shanklin parodies they were just AWSOME, very talented and brought so much humor to Rush’s shows!!
So many memories. 29 year listener here. One way to honor/memorialize Rush is by giving to one of the charities he sponsored and felt passionate about. Rushlimbaugh.com has the various charities listed under the ‘Military support’ tab.
I listened in 1988 and the aftermath of Bush defeating Dukakis (Rush called him “The Loser.”)
I also remember him playing the Homeless and Feminist Updates with their theme songs. “Ain’t Got no Home” by Clarence Frogman Henry and “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore.
Gorbachev was still head of the USSR and if there were stories of liberals loving Gorbachev it was called the “Gorbasm Update” and the theme was the Imperial March from Empire Strikes Back.
I have 3 of Rush’s scarves he had them to match the ties, all signed by Rush!!
Don’t remember that - but it did remind me of something I racked my brain for - anyone remember the “Raspberry effect”?
