This is the new NASA, meaning I don’t have much confidence in them.
Hoping for the best. And that China would only have beat us by a week.
I hear you and do understand somewhat BUT they do deserve more credit than you are giving them.
Mars examples;
1) Mars Odyssey orbiter [2001] Spectrometers and thermal imager - Detecting Mars environment.
2) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter [2006] Photo and RADAR observation of Mars.
3) Curiosity rover (Mars Science Laboratory) [2012] - surface exploration.
4) MAVEN orbiter (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) [2014] Science & Telecom Relay.
5) Insight lander (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) [2018] Mars interior exploration.
All of the above are currently operational and reporting. Not all are at 100% function, but lifespans are better than the original (minimum) estimations.
Go for landing, Perseverance, this Thursday, 18 February 2021, 1500 EST/2000 UTC! BUT PLEASE, not too hard!
