Democrats learned an important lesson during the Great Depression. The country was in economic ruins but they got elected and those who did lived pretty well, as did the few Republican Quislings. FDR ran out country like modern day Venezuela and were it not for WW2 we might still be living ‘The New Deal”.
My fear is the obvious parallels between China and that of pre-WW2 Germany.

The Chinese have 'lost face' due to their being identified as the source of the covid pandemic,
much the same a Germany felt resentment after World War II.
In the Orient, 'losing face' is the dominant provocation for hostilities.
Add to that the obvious trade imbalances of the last few decades, and then Trump correctly identifying those trade imbalances,
the Chinese feel slighted, if not outright offended while they are trying to dominate and expand their "sphere of influence" throughout the world.
This Chinese plan is being accomplished through the "Belt and Road Initiative", whereby China invests in other countries infrastructure, a stratedgy that was developed in 2013 .
Currently, these strategy investments can be found by virtue of monetary loans and trade agreements can be found in over 70 countries.
Since these are massive loans that few countries can readily repay, the countries give up some of their national sovereignty,
and yield to pressures from China for land, trade, sea ports, and food stuffs and livestock.
The intiiative also includes government officials, press and media, international organizations,and is even into professional sports programs.
The rate of Chinese expansion is similar to the German Army Weirmarch sweeping across Europe in WWII ; that is 70 countries in only 7 years !
