free version - it’ll tell you all the stuff you want toknow about your computer...
Office type programs (I now primarily use Libre Office)?
Won’t use open source crapware on the desktop unless I’m forced. Especially the crapware that is LibreOffice/OpenOffice/StarOffice.
Was forced to convert over to OpenOffice (the school bought into the whole open source is good garbage) and all my PowerPoint slide decks needed major fixes. No macros, transitions or automation support carried over.
————————-
Audio processing?
Don’t tell me you use Audacity? Garbageware. ProTools, Logic, Reason, Wwise or nothing.
————————-
Image processing / enhancement?
I’m guessing you use the crapware also know as the Gimp. Total garbage. Not compatible with photoshop or layered PNGs. No studio will use.
——————————
Data acquisition? No need for that, If needed I write custom code in unity/Unreal/ lumberyard for that. (Windows 10 or a Mac required). Nvidia CUDA and path/ray-tracing requires Windows 10, as does SLI
——————————
Graphics (art / drawing / CAD)? It it’s not the industry standards of Autodesk Maya, 3DSMax, Modo or Houdini, it’s trash. No self-respecting game or production studio uses the crapware known Blender which is known to flip normals, handedness and destroy FBX files
——————————
Games? No DirectX 10/11/12 support?
Only if you want to play early 2000’s or late 1990’s games or those few with OpenGL support.
——————————
Etc.? 99% of all that I can do with a Win XP compatible app.
Guess you don’t do much real work with a computer.
I have an Atari 520ST with Magic Sac and a 512 KB memory upgrade board.
I also have an Atari 800.
Thanks for that post. I keep thinking I should give Ubuntu a try...
However, pages like this have me seriously puzzled.
https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04/
What if I have an Intel processor?
I do not see 4 types of images. 2 of the 3 shown are identical?
I do not know the 1st thing about “desktop images”.
For starters...
Granted I’m 1/2 asleep. :-)

Got a Commodore Amiga 4000T in storage. Time to rediscover using lightwave on it ...
Dissenter (by Gab).
Downloaded it a couple weeks ago. Its ticker said that it has blocked 10,162 ads, and done 219 security upgrades. It’s fast.
“Come on Windows 7 is dead.”
Out of my cold dead hands. All of my computers are Windows 7. Hubby’s are 10, and he spends hours a week on the phone or online with our technical support company.
I’ve had only two issues with it. Last week they upgraded Malwarebytes to the newest version. Once or twice a day the system would freeze, requiring powering off to shut down. It wouldn’t even do a contl + alt + delete. Tech support changed Malwarebytes to the prior version and it’s perfect now.
I was running MS Office 2003 and Hubby talked me into loading Office 365. Outlook wouldn’t work in either version. The tech checked it out and said that there were dueling .dll files. So I uninstalled 365 and it’s good again.
And you’re right; none of our cars is as old as Windows 7.
I’ll keep using Windoze 7 until nothing is compatible with it anymore.
“It has promise but it is a mess plus spies on you.”
That’s the single biggest reason to stay away from W10.
I won’t touch latest&greatest from PC vendors and browser hucksters — ‘cause those are the targets of the dweebs out there in WWW-land. It’s like scuba diving after having chummed the area for an hour.
Anyhoo, try FirefoxESR, ver52. ESR versions are issued by the Mozilla bunch for corporate use — and corps intensely dislike having to “upgrade” browsers and such since that also involves “updating” all the custom, in-house tweaks their employees insist on making to any browser. ESR’s contain all the latest security mods, but skip a lot of the goofy bells&whistles the Mozilla bunch regularly grinds out to keep the proles happy.
There are 32and 64 bit versions. Either runs OK, even on a WinXP. They also permit the use of popular Add-ons, which the Mozilla bunch are constantly disabling with their near-weekly “updates”. The Add-ons include adblockers, which can really speed up downloads.
Yes and that reason is large corporate entities upgraded hundreds/thousands of their PC's. (No longer supported for a maintenance contract, needed faster/better, etc.) Usually fully depreciated. If not the hassle of selling them, doing the bookkeeping to recapture claimed depreciation (like section 179) is not worth the hassle. And they can't just toss them in a dumpster (recycling laws).
So they hire a recycler to take them off their hands. The recycle typically has little to no cost basis and so can blow them out for very little.
I use Palemoon for my Mozilla browser, and Flashpeak for my Chromium browser, HOWEVER, I’ve been tinkering with Disenter and am probably going to start using that as my primary browser. I’ll keep Flashpeak however cuz it allows me to download YouTube videos.
Excuse me? I own and drive a 1997 Toyota Corolla. Before that it was a 2000 Chevy Lumina.
:-)
That’s really good information to know. Thanks for sharing that.
Come on, Man....one of the machines I still use regularly is running Vista. ;-)
Dissenter (it’s a GAB product) Works GREAT !
I just bought a new laptop and had W7 installed. The others are garbage.
Do products like Norton (etc) protect from viruses? I thought that’s what you pay them to do.
“Probably the best option for a non-power user is to buy a used Dell PC that has Windows 10 already on it. You can get those for $30-$50 at most large city recycling places. That is where you go and do a local pickup, avoiding a $25-$30 shipping charge. Paying $100 to upgrade an older PC to upgrade to Windows 10 makes no sense.”
I’m in Japan ..and my old Dell is working just fine ...Just want to change browser as IE is obsolete .
I can confirm that Dissenter is FAST. Amazing how much time it must take for others to churn through all of the spying software that comes with it.
