Firefox is a memory pig. Always #3 behind Chrome and the New Edge for memory consumption and speed.
Doesn't apply if you are buying a used Dell (as in my example) that came with Windows 10.
Thank you. I will give that a look. Probably time to look into a new computer as well.
Thank you!
Thanks for all the advice, folks! But I confess that my question was half-ironic.
My asking, "How am I to know which version of Windows I have / How can I find out?" is analogous to my 95-year-old maiden aunt asking, "The auto repairman says I need a new 'carburetor' - whatever that is! I suspect he's lying; how can I check that myself?" and my replying with some perfect technical explanation.
You folks don't seem to appreciate the irony: Anyone asking such an elementary question simply won't understand your answer.
Regards,
But how am I to know which poster is asking something half-ironic (or 25% or 75%)? How can I find out? š

That is a different story than taking the OEM OS on your Dell and legally transferring and activating it on another PC.
If you have a device that came pre-installed with Windows 10 (for example, Surface Laptop 3 and Dell XPS 13), then you are dealing with an "OEM" license. In this case, the product key isn't transferable, and you are not allowed to use it to activate another device. - https://www.windowscentral.com/how-transfer-windows-10-license-new-computer-or-hard-drive
True, but if you buy a used system that you are going to use that has Windows 10 installed, it is a moot point.
Wrong: Chrome based extensions come far behind in the number and breadth of functionality that legacy Firefox accumulated over the years. In totality it cannot even match the functionality that Tab Mix Plus provided ( PC World said that "With Tab Mix Plus, Firefox tabs go past the obvious and into the indispensable... it's hard to imagine how you lived without it.") along with Colorful Tabs. Show me the Chrome extension than enables multiple tab rows, or adjusts max or min tab width, or even a simple option like enabling Ctrl+Tab to toggle btwn more recently opened tabs, rather than the ridiculous through all tabs (there is an extension that is sppsd to do this but apparently it does not do that, but sets up alternative keys, and I have not figured it out yet). Or adds Copy Url on the right click menu for a inactive tab. Or that keeps the Find bar open across all tabs, Or any of the other functions I listed (and there are more), with the possible exception of the Open With extension I found.
The depends on who is doing the testing i suppose: https://www.pcmag.com/news/chrome-edge-firefox-opera-or-safari-which-browser-is-best
However, I was comparing legacy Firefox with modern browsers, and I would rather have a utility truck for doing work than a sedan.
Hidden Chrome option that enables stacked tabs.
chrome://flags/#stacked-tab-strip
I have used and liked TabsOutliner. Why would I want 300 tabs open? To me that means one is doing something wrong. Prefer to have tabs that are open, or bookmarked, or grouped in a side window, all easily visible and accessible. Can make that side window any size I want.
I have a new Apple Laptop sitting nearby never used yet... because I’m still using my Vista! LOL....
So you are comparing the number of extensions for an OLD, legacy version of Firefox. Firefox is up to version 85. Many of those extension don't work on the new version that started in version 57. You really want to stay stuck on an old antiquated browser?
I have tried those which come default on Vivaldi 3.6. Inferior to multiple tab rows.
Why would I want 300 tabs open? To me that means one is doing something wrong.
But no means. If did not have so many it would hinder productivity. In one browser used mainly for forums and related research than I have tabs of sites I want to have handy, plus ones I am engaged with or want to check on. On another browser for shopping I have many tabs for items I regularly buy (bike parts, etc.) depending on the deason. On another browsers I have tabs for bills to pay and good movies (hard to find) when I too tired. On another browser I mainly just do Quora, and with my stiff arthritic fingers I do a lot of copying and pasting in response to similar questions, adapting them as needed. When you have a lot of irons in the fire, and can easily fit 6 rows of identifiable tabs, 25 across, differently colored according to source (as seen in post 105) on a 23" monitor, then it is far quicker to have everything handy to quickly access. Thank God.
Yes sir, for sure. I am on two of them every day for they far surpass others (apart from Waterfox classic, and Basilisk) in functionality and only a few sites need a modern html5 rendering engine for now. But you can use others as needed, thank God.
Thats why you have bookmarks. So you don’t have to consume the memory and other resources to keep 300 tabs open. Even if a browser does some type of lazy, deferred loading, that still consumes resources. I can have all those in a side window and then instantly click or enter a keyword and then click. Why would I want the top of my browser window wasted by 6 or 8 rows of tabs?
There is a reason why Firefox redesigned their internals - better use of multicore processors, better security, a faster rendering engine, sandboxing. I want to go into the future not get stuck in the past.
There was an error message regarding free upgrade from 7 to 10. Apparently, MS has stopped providing free upgrades.
Bookmarks?! Do I have bookmarks, with abundant folders for organization, and hardly want to add more. The time it takes to drill down and find and open the bookmark i can have already found many pages that are waiting for me in just few seconds. Even if you want about 160 documented sources on Covid19, or about 200 allegations of voter fraud. all copied with formatting and posted to render accordingly? Give me a about 30 seconds.
Even if a browser does some type of lazy, deferred loading, that still consumes resources. I can have all those in a side window and then instantly click or enter a keyword and then click. I have 32GB or RAM and a 4.0 quad-care Ryzen CPU, thank God, and with one click can restart the browser which clears things up and restores all my tabs just as they were. Only slow down is when I first click on one it reloads it.
Why would I want the top of my browser window wasted by 6 or 8 rows of tabs?
Less than 2 inches? Why not? But that is you. For me it is like having the particular paint colors out when doing a painting, not stored in a drawer, so let me do the work I use the PC mainly for, and the tools to do it, though you find no need for such.
Like I said, I want a utility truck, not a spared-down sedan that goes faster but take a whole lot longer to get work down, if it can even enable it. Chrome does not even offer "View selection source" as Firefox does. If you do not know why that is so useful then that is part of our divide.
