When you put an RFID chip on something to track it you generally want to put it where it won't be seen. You would still have to get the reader to o.5 and 2 meters from the chip depending on the material it is applied to.

Putting it on the surface would obviate that. It is easy enough to change RFID chips. It would greatly reduce the visual appeal for displayed coins.
