I have been to a hundred viewings in my life, and none were overnight.

I believe the vigil was held under "cover of darkness" both inside the building and out, because they were going to film the vigil crowd standing in darkness and combine it with footage of the Biden's taken elsewhere.
The persons present had to be in darkness lest they latter say, "I was there and I never saw Biden". 

Note: I thought the same thing when Hillary and Chelsea were shown in a photograph and the caption said they'd just viewed a Broadway show. I didn't believe it to be true. But if you're sneaking someone in a side door of a darkened theatre you can alway tell people she was there, you just didn't see her.

Another likely reason for the overnight vigil is that few people would stand there overnight, whereas they might for a vigil lasting several hours. Having a completely darkened crowd standing there overnight could be used to explain away no one seeing Biden come or go, or being there when they were there.

Recall this scene from Raider's of the lost ark? They didn't need to move a crew to an old warehouse of infinite size. They just filmed the actor pushing the crate and can drop it in to a painting, a combination of video and a painting etc.
