This week, Pizza Hut launched its new Detroit-style pizza.
There’s just one problem: A lot of people have no clue what that is.
“Detroit style? I’ve never heard of it,” said Mike Zurek, 70, who has lived in Chicago nearly all his life. For him, there is only one deep-dish pizza: Chicago style. “But every place has its way of making it unique.”
Even some Detroiters are a bit puzzled. Karen Gunderson stopped by a Pizza Hut in suburban Detroit this week to pick up a stuffed-crust pie. She had seen on the news that the pizza-making chain was rolling out a Detroit-style version but wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.
“I’m not really familiar with Detroit style,” said Ms. Gunderson, 72, who grew up in the area and has lived there most of her life. She is open to trying Pizza Hut’s newest creation, and hopes it’s as good as its signature stuffed crust.

Domino’s has contracts to provide school lunch pizza these days. Not that weird square thing you and I used to get.
Michiganers who left the state and looking for a little bit of home will all try it at least once.
Totino’s perhaps?
When I was young and pizza was relatively new on the American food scene a pizza house opened in our small Illinois town. It became wildly popular...until an investigation linked it to a spate of dog disappearances.
Here is a picture of one being delivered:

A guy boards an airplane to Detroit and makes his way to his seat where he notices the guy sitting next to him looks very worried. He asks him if he’s afraid of flying.
“No, my company is moving me to Detroit. I’ve heard terrible things about Detroit; I’m worried about my family.”
The guy tells him, “Look, it’s not at all like the rumors. I’ve lived in Detroit my whole life. Find a nice home in a nice suburb, get your kids into a decent school, the community is great... you’ll be fine, trust me.”
The other guy seems to perk up and says, “Hey, thanks man, you’ve really calmed my nerves, I feel better. So what do you do in Detroit?”
“I’m a tail-gunner on a Pizza Hut van...”
Detroit-style pizza: pretty much a pale shadow of a once-respected and hard-working original, now littered with detritus, bad for your health and paid for by someone else.
when my boys were young they worked a various pizza joints.
They said that jets was the best for ingredients, recipies and they way they prepare them. They will eat nothing but jets pizza..
I wish they had one up here in the thumb
Betty Jo Bialowsky!
You are so right. So amend my original post. Never buy from chain restaurants. Period. It is globalist corporations that want $15/hr minimum wage because it kills small businesses - their competition.
We used to eat at the Village Pizza in Corrales, New Mexico. There must be others, too.
Keeping with the context of the article, that’s rich. Love how people come up with a “style” thinking everybody knows what they are talking about...
that is flint style... LOL
Sorry, I’m from New Haven, we have real pizza here.
Pepe’s, Sally’s, Modern Apizza, Yorkside. Everything else is junk on bread.
Never did before. Not about to start now.
LOL
I’m from the Detroit area and I don’t know what it is either......
“I’d like a pizza to go, with no anchovies.”
“You’ve got the wrong man — I spell my name Danger!”
“What?”
(For extra points, on what Firesign Theatre album was the other end of that phone conversation?)
I used to hang out in the Hamtramck area back in the 70's and ate at Buddy's many, many times. Great pizza then and still is........
Should Round Table offer the thick Chicago style? Would it sell in Calif?
