Pizza Hut Launches ‘Detroit-Style’ Pizza, and America Says ‘Huh?’
Wall Street Journal ^ | Jan. 28, 2021 | By Mike Colias and Annie Gasparro

This week, Pizza Hut launched its new Detroit-style pizza.

There’s just one problem: A lot of people have no clue what that is.

“Detroit style? I’ve never heard of it,” said Mike Zurek, 70, who has lived in Chicago nearly all his life. For him, there is only one deep-dish pizza: Chicago style. “But every place has its way of making it unique.”

Even some Detroiters are a bit puzzled. Karen Gunderson stopped by a Pizza Hut in suburban Detroit this week to pick up a stuffed-crust pie. She had seen on the news that the pizza-making chain was rolling out a Detroit-style version but wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.

“I’m not really familiar with Detroit style,” said Ms. Gunderson, 72, who grew up in the area and has lived there most of her life. She is open to trying Pizza Hut’s newest creation, and hopes it’s as good as its signature stuffed crust.

Never buy pizza from a chain restaurant. Support you local mom and pop pizza place.

Yes, it looks like a Sicilian pizza to me, too.

They use actual blood for the sauce.

The best pizza I’ve had was at the Village Pizza in Bonsall California. North San Diego county.

I was aware of Detroit Style Pizza. I've even had it a couple times. Unlike New York and Chicago style which are vastly different, I always felt Detroit style was more just a gimmick, like some Pizza place in Detroit one day said, "lets mess with the order of the toppings a little and tell people it's Detroit Style."

For those that don't know "Detroit Style" is basically just a thick crust Pizza with the sauce on top instead of the bottom. In fact it's not even particularly original as New Jersey has been doing the same thing for far longer with their "Tomato Pie" pizza. The only difference is the "tomato pie" tends to be a round thin crust (basically a New York style with the sauce on top), while the Detroit is a rectangular thick crust with the sauce on top.

We have Jet’s here. It’s a very good pizza. Are used to live in New Hampshire. All of the pizza there with few exceptions was a Greek style with spongy crust and lousy canned sauce. I am moved to Florida when I retired and now we have really good New York style from several places. I had never heard of Detroit style pizza, but I stopped at Jet‘s one day and I was impressed with the sauce and the crispy crust.

I have yet to find good Rhode Island rectangular pizza any place other than Rhode Island. I also miss Olneyville hot wieners. And yeah, the Chinese food in Florida is disgusting. Imagine pork fried rice that is almost white with peas and carrots!!

They don’t use chicken meat for the “sausage” or “pepperoni”.

It is locally sourced from the remains of Jimmy Hoffa.

At least until the $15 minimum wage kicks in. There might not be any local places left.

The next time you link to an image, include this in the tag:

width="500"

It will prevent the image from scrolling off the right side of the screen.

Domino's got the same reaction when they introduced the Brooklyn Style. People in Brooklyn said WTF.

I did not know that Domino's sells pizza. Thanks for the info.

What a crock! The best pizza in that area is across the border in Windsor Ont. Franco’s, Sam’s or Riviara. The rest are pretenders.......

Maybe its cover with spent shell casings, used needles and some coney island white fish. Served with a pitcher of lead tainted water. Mouth watering goodness.
