More than £1 billion in debt and just hours before a meeting where he would be asked to explain a £38 million hole in his Mirror Newspapers' pension funds, Robert Maxwell's 22st body was found floating in the sea near the Canary Islands.
Last Sunday, in the first part of our serialisation of a gripping new biography of the tycoon, we told of the run-up to his death. Here, in the final extract, we tell how the fall-out from it still reverberates today.
Within hours of Robert Maxwell's death on November 5, 1991, tributes from world leaders began pouring in. An early caller to his widow Betty was US President George H. W. Bush.
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also rang, as did Lord Goodman, a former adviser to Harold Wilson. He suggested a memorial service for Maxwell in Westminster Abbey might be appropriate.
Prime Minister John Major is believed to have delayed his weekly audience with the Queen so he could write his tribute to the media tycoon. 'No one should doubt his interest in peace and his loyalty to friends,' Major wrote.
'His was an extraordinary life, lived to the full.'
Germany's Chancellor Helmut Kohl was 'very sad', while Russia's President Mikhail Gorbachev was 'deeply grieved'.
Maxwell's Daily Mirror was unstinting in its praise, marking his passing with the newsprint version of a 21-gun salute.
'The body of Robert Maxwell, publishing giant and world statesman, was found in the Atlantic today,' the paper's front page announced. Readers who wanted to know more about this 'Great Big Extraordinary Man' were invited to turn to pages 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 18, 19, 34, 35 and 36.
But the outpouring of adulation would be short-lived.

If you’re part of the intelligence community, it is always, “suicide”
1991-Does it really matter?
When it doesn’t matter is the only time we learn the truth.
Ah yes I remember it well. Of course he killed himself. He threw himself off of his yacht while offshore the Canary Islands.
♪ ♫ ♬”Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”♪ ♫ ♬ did him in.
Wow! At least, Guislaine is telling something... .
To be continued.
Killed himself just like Epstein did. Just like.
How many bodies does this guy have? What is "22st"? Who wrote this article?
I believe that that is 22 stone—about 300 pounds (1 stone=14 pounds, so 22 stone would be a way of saying slightly more than 300 pounds, but less than 325 pounds).
In other words, a big body.
22st is for 22 stone, the old British unit for weight (Daily Mail being a UK based paper). A stone is around 14 lbs, so 22 stone is around 300 lbs.. Mr Maxwell wasn’t a small man.
Reportedly he made a point of urinating over the side; it was a point of pride. With only a strand of wire or rope at shin level, it’s quite possible he simply fell in late one night while answering nature’s call. Good riddance.
Early version of Ark@n$1de.
When I was way younger I did a bit of yacht racing. Urinating over the stern on night watch was a common way to go. Now people use jack lines at night to attach themselves to the boat. I took a partial dip that way once night. Luckily I got hooked up on a back stay, as the only other guy on night watch with me was barely conscious himself. He didn’t even notice.
Maxwell was totally corrupt and a thief. He was also Mossad but that is of little consequence unless Mossad killed him. Men such as he do not commit suicide least they have honor. He had no honor, who killed him? Many wanted to kill him.
Oddly his daughter Gisleen is a victim of accepted debauch including those of youth. To her it was just normal and good and exciting. She is a victim and a perp. She must pay for this.

Can’t read anything that messed up.....
Ghislaine is still alive? That’s cool.
I was actually “there”. I was First Mate on a yacht & had sailed from Grand Canaria to Tenerife the day it happened. The ships tender came right by my boat. I didn’t know what all the action was until I called back to the States. My mom told me all she knew about it. ...
Quite an interesting read. Ghislane is not mentioned in the book much but she certainly learned at her father’s knee. Her methods were his methods.
When she’s murdered, pretty sure that’s going to be listed as ‘assisted’ suicide.
