He probably didn’t want to deal with kidnapping and child endangerment charges, or worse if the kid died because of anything he did.

A righteous carjacker.
Beaverton is a suburb of Portland. This is exactly the kind of carjacker I would expect because stealing a car is barely even a crime in that area (but kidnapping is). It has already been ruled in court, as I recall, that if a car thief is pulled over by cops for grand theft, all he has to do is say that he didn't know it was stolen (e.g. "My friend loaned it to me! I didn't know it was stolen!") and he avoids prosecution. No, I'm not kidding.
