Here in Hollywood, we had a young employee who was more “trained” in graphic design than another 3-year grad from Art Institute. Had ALL Adobe programs mastered to a degree than the other guys in the same dept. The hiring guy didnt say anything why he was hired. During the Christmas party, one of our senior guys asked him which college he graduated from and he said he didn’t. The only thing he said was College of Pirate Bay and Youtube”
What he did was download the bootleg versions off Pirate Bay, watched on youtube how to do graphic design, learned the programs manually and sent in his portfolio.
I acquired my first copy of Adobe Photoshop (6!) In high school from my graphic design teacher, and have used it every since. I’ve upgraded to CS2, and the newer versions are unfamiliar to me, but only in layout. My former workplace has a brand new copy, and I used it recently to touch up something of mine. So, so different.
But really, graphic design is easy to learn as long as you have a good eye. That’s more natural talent than anything else.
I need an education to do what I want to do (nursing —> physician assistant), but I have no money left, and I need to get out of IL first.
This demonstrates Elon Musk’s thoughts on college. In an interview he basically said that today you can learn just about anything for free online. College is just for having fun, and for proving you can do your chores and work with deadlines, but not for learning.
That’s why at his companies they look for proof of exceptional performance, not degrees.
