I thought the same thing. I was on a 2 year enlistment in 1987 in the Army. However it was a special deal. We were the first class of 19k M-1 Abrams tankers through Ft Knox, when the Army replaced the M-60. In 2 years I earned my corporal stripes. He was in 2005 to 2007 rank was quick in those years. Not so much in my time.
There are 2-year enlistments from time to time when the Services cannot meet their quotas.
Indeed you have to be a total clown to still be E1 on discharge.
