I get the impression he has that weight on his shoulders...coming out and abandoning the GOP in favor of another party. My opinion is it’s a hail mary pass, but there is no other choice.

The Whigs were a major party. They elected 4 presidents (Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, & Fillmore). They won the presidency in 1948, and got 44% of the popular vote in 1952.
The Republican party held its first convention and nominated its first presidential candidate in 1956. The won the presidency just 4 years later in 1860.
The Whig party didn’t even nominate a candidate in 1860. In 12 short years they had gone from a major party winning the presidency to non-existence, and replaced by the GOP.
The idea that the GOP can’t be replaced is incorrect. It will be difficult, but it can be done.
