I went to Google maps and put the little man on both sides (Supreme Court side which I think is east and the Washington Monument/Mall side which I think is west).

Looks to me like it’s the west (Washington Monument) side. I’m basing it on the way the steps he’s standing on appear to be curved, and the flat area behind him has a grate/drainage channel, which is on the west side. Plus the bit of stairs going towards the building that we can see appear to have various levels. There’s no curved steps on the east side that I can tell, and the steps going into the Capitol on the east are straight up.

Wish that scaffolding wasn’t there!

I’m sorry to hear that it might be the west side. Anyone who walked one step past where the bicycle rack fences were can be in big trouble by the words of the law. Possibly anyone who stepped 1 foot onto the grass even on the mall side of the bicycle rack fences might have broken the law.

Burning and looting and breaking windows in stores and in federal buildings all around the country led to some arrests but quick release and few of any convictions. ... Certainly no loss of jobs, loss of college diploma, blacklist from future employment etc.
