The McKenzie brothers bit started originally because the CBC (Canada’s version of PBS, but worse) wanted something more “Canadian” on the show, so the guys said something like “what, guys drinking beer and eating back bacon” and the PTB said “sure.”
The rest was a very lucrative history.
I was a kid when I watched SCTV, probably from age 12 to 16. I remember it coming on AFTER SNL and being funnier. I was a fan.
