Trump had a record of success in life, and in particular at being a Chief Executive. John James’ resume is much thinner than Trump’s was. Aside from that, I’m going with my gut instinct about John James. He strikes me as insincere and an opportunist. I could be wrong, but for me personally, I would want to see more from him before I determine that he’s the real deal.

And don’t forget, it’s the easiest thing in the world to be the perfect conservative when you’re running for election the first time. The hard part is governing or legislating as one, once in office. How many times have conservatives fallen for this in the past? Just go back 10 years and look at all the candidates who jumped on the Tea Party bandwagon. How many of them turned out to be the real deal? Marco Rubio and Mike Lee are just two examples of candidates who ended up revealing that they were not what they had claimed to be.

So I would encourage people to learn from past experience and don’t be so quick to embrace the flavor of the month until he/she has a track record on which to judge him/her

Admittedly, Trump did not have a track record in political office by which to judge him, so there was a certain amount of uncertainty in how he would actually govern once in office. But those of us who supported him did so on the basis of his track record in different, but related fields of life, and on our judgement of his character. Speaking personally, I think Trump’s track record shows my judgement of him to have been correct.

You may feel differently, but personally I don’t have that same level of confidence in John James at the moment and would need to see more from him to determine that he’s ready to lead the Republicans in the Senate.
