My college buddy told me a story about his father's graduation in the immediate years after WWII. His father's class was the first not required to the study Greek. (The Latin requirement hung on a decade longer.)

The head of the Classics department, who as dean of faculty was on the dais to hand each graduate his degree, lifted the stack of degrees and dumped them unceremoniously on the floor saying, "These are your degrees and this is where they belong," and walked off.
