Not being exposed to sunlight (UV radiation) all that time likely has a lot to do with it. I certainly hope the preservationists have taken that into consideration, otherwise, those beautiful colours are likely to fade quite rapidly, now that they’re once again exposed to open air and sunlight...

Great point.

These were a big surprise for their brightness and preserved detail.

Little did these poor people know that their lives would come roaring back to life 2000 years after they were buried in volcanic ash.
