I learned to “read” people over time, and got to be pretty good at it. That being said, there were always about 10% of people that I couldn’t “read”, and I would be able to realize that fairly early onward. Furthermore, I also learned to ignore what people said, but rather, watch what they do.
IMHO, Pence seems to broadcast a virtually wooden personality. Again, some people will choose to do this when they don’t want anybody to be able to “read” them. To me, this is indicative of someone who is hiding something.
Who, or what he is hiding, is anybody’s guess.

Very insightful post. I think you are right. He seems “wooden” even though he’s constantly to try to appeal to people. Interesting that after all his years in politics he can’t project sincerity (to some of us) as well as G W Bush.
Yes, your comment reminds me of someone I found mysterious. He somehow let us know through is demeanor alone that we were not to ask him any questions. I described him to the lady he was wooing as “a blank screen” who invited others to project whatever they wanted him to be onto the screen. I advised her not to be deceived and told her he was a doorway painted on a brick wall. A year or two later, she would tell me I was correct.
I never developed your skill at that - I imagine there had to be far more like that guy in my professional career that I never perceived.
Odd that Pence rose anyway.
Another important aspect besides Pence is the coming government shutdown. Two days off this week, come in Monday, and shutdown on Tuesday. This keeps the deep state at its weakest when military action starts. It makes locking down access much easier if the cubicles are empty. It keeps them away from encrypted comms and allows the team track the alternatives they use.
And what if Trump announces nonessential workers should stay home on Monday? That means they had four full days to secures things before anyone sniffs it, and then a week or more to finish the job.
