An early experiment toward using sun-dimming technology to cool global warming has opponents fearing a slippery slope toward engineering the climate

The flight, which requires approval from a Harvard project advisory committee, will test how to manoeuvre the balloon and check communications equipment and other systems. It would not release any particles into the stratosphere.

Still, if successful, it could be a step towards an experiment, perhaps in the autumn of 2021 or spring of 2022, to release a tiny amount – up to 2 kg - of non-toxic calcium carbonate dust into the atmosphere, Keith said.

Studying that material's effects on high-altitude sunlight could help advance understand of how solar geoengineering might work.

But opponents see the Swedish balloon as a step on a slippery slope towards engineering the climate with an artificial sunshade - something with potentially large and hard-to-predict risks, such as shifts in global rain patterns.

Officials of the Harvard project, the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx), said they did not believe it needed any special approval from Sweden for the flight.

SCoPEx said about 300 similar stratospheric balloons were launched worldwide in 2019. Backers of SCoPEx include Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Anni Bolenius, spokeswoman for the Swedish Space Corporation, also said "We comply with all applicable international and national legislations."

When I do that they either immediately get mad at me or their eyes glaze over and they change the subject.

My heating bill says that we don’t need any global cooling.

If these people start messing with the climate the they have declared war on the human race as far as I am concerned.

And the human race should declare war back on them. Take no prisoners.

Oh noes.

Climate change is horrible, the worst thing to ever happen.

We must not try to mitigate it

Except by destroying the economy and moving in to a totalitarian society.

If this, or further, experiments go wrong, where is the spare planet that humanity can move to?

It’s cute how humans think they have any part in the ultimate fate of climate or planet.

There was a serious proposal to set off a number of nuclear weapons to kick up dust into the upper atmosphere to initiate global cooling.

Start with major population centers and the problem will be correct one way or the other.

In all seriousness, people should stop 'effing with things they don't understand.

Just 15 days of midnight to lower the temperature.

Back in the seventies, in order to combat global cooling, there were serious proposals to spray oil and soot mixed together on the poles as the white snow reflected the sun’s heat!

I’m old enough to remember the “experts” and “scientists” were going to coat the ice caps with soot to save us from global cooling.

These people are completely insane and will cause a new and permanent ice age.

Doesn’t matter which way the climate is going, if the glaciers melt it’ll start a new ice age by drastically cooling the oceans, as happened during the Younger Dryas.

Dear Humans:

Maybe in a couple thousand years you may be able to affect the weather. Maybe.

Then, in a couple of thousand years, you may be able to change the climate. Maybe. If you last that long.

Sincerely,

G-d

They will if they are allowed to do whatever they want. They should watch that movie ‘The Road’ or better yet read the book by Cormac McCarthy. It’s a book about a father and son trying to survive in a world where all the plants have died off. The book doesn’t say why, but the description of the weather makes it clear it’s either or both because of the sun being blotted out or the CO2 level on earth has gone too low. So what happens? The plants die out and then animals, and then there’s no more food and the people resort to cannibalism. Anyone trying to “dim the sun” should be shot.
