Wrong. They only slammed into the rear of the idiot who was out on a desert highway driving at about 20mph, after first mowing down the bicyclist who were traveling BEHIND their so called safety vehicle.

Since there was physical evidence all over the place, why do you think didn’t the cops cite, arrest, and or charge the driver of the truck?

Since everyone here is just speculating, I'll throw in my WAG:

I'd say box truck driver was hauling along, probably not paying overly much attention to the road because the roads out there are normally wide open and EMPTY. His brain registered the Subaru from afar but not the bikes, and not the relative speed of the Subaru.

When he got close enough, he probably moved into the fast lane to pass, but got spooked by one or more of the bikes that he didn't see originally, maybe just because they were there, maybe because at least one of the jackass cyclists was creeping out into the left lane as well.

Box truck driver either hits one and THEN freaks out, or just freaks out when he sees the cyclists at the last second, and he did the whole swerve and over-correct thing, until he had managed to hit all the trailing cyclists AND the car from behind.
