Thanks for the update. Just goes to show you, with people yaking on phones, texting, doing hard drugs, falling asleep, out on an open 2 lane open desert highway, where vehicles are normally doing 75-90mph, it's not a real good idea to go bicycling out there. I certainly wouldn't do it.☺
Btw, with all the attention this got and as bad as it was with 5 fatalities, they never once stated if the bicyclist were in the #1 lane or the #2 lane, and in fact never stated once if the bicyclist and or their so call, Safety vehicle" were on the shoulder, past the solid white fog line. I find that very odd they completely left that information out. Legally it won't matter much for the truck driver, but from an investigation standpoint, as it's critical to the investigation to establish where everyone was at point of impact. I say this because they darn well where the safety vehicle and the bicyclist were at the point of impact. So it's pretty odd they neglected to mention if those people were in, or partially in the #2 lane at point of impact or if they were all on the shoulder where they should have been. Why they didn't reveal this is inquisitive and a bit suspect in my mind.

"...the attitude on display here..."
Yes, very dark hearts here that can attract dangerous karma. They seemingly cannot contain themselves.
On this and other related FR threads they are twisting themselves into pretzels on why it was not *really* the truck driver's fault.
They would meanwhile go ballistic if a DUI driver recklessly injured or killed someone in their family. Very little self-awareness, it seems.

So for all of you who blamed the cyclists, you may apologize now. No one blamed them rather there were comments about how some bicyclist will put themselves in grave danger. Such as in this story.
At #127 and I stated: Bicyclist who ride with a couple of feet from 4,000++ pound vehicles traveling at 40,50,60 or 85 mph are simply ignorant, nutz, have a death wish and are likly suicidal.
I've seen the results of people going under the wheels or struck by what is essentially 4,000 pound hammers. It's really ugly and a terrible way to die.
And I stand by the above!

You will find the blame-shifting by some to be quite remarkable in this original thread about the terrible collision.

I moved to a place where riding is difficult due to narrow roads, more hills than I like and ignorant people like way too many on this site.

What if the DUI speeding truck driver instead smashed into a subcompact car driver paused at roadside to make a cellphone call? Btw, I'd never suggest anyone do that unless it's an emergency/breakdown etc...Even for a car, stopping along side a highway/freeway, out of lanes, to make a call can end in death and often does. Again, it's legal to stop there, but the occupants are often dead right.

They seem to forget that the Free in Free Republic doesn’t give them full rein to criticize whatever they personally don’t like "But I got behind one once and it took me an extra minute to get where I was going. And he was wearing bright colors."
I once got into it here with someone who insisted that she did not need to be able to stop within the distance she could see down the road as long as she was obeying the speed limit. When I showed her the DMV manual from her state, she refused to believe it. "If the speed limit says 80 mph and I can only see 50 feet because of fog, I can drive 80."

Is there any information on who he was driving for? Ping me if anyone knows.
What a sad story. But we are now in a country that thinks any kind of drugs are fine.... Oh, as long as it’s not cigarettes you know, cigarettes’ are bad for you and causes death from second hand smoke and all....

"...DMV manual..."
My mom and dad wisely told me when I was learning to drive that I would likely avoid 99% of vehicle accidents in my life simply by SLOWING DOWN to allow more "time cushion" for decisions.
As a longtime rider I have lost count of the impatient motorists who have passed me going uphill, around a blind corner, with a double-yellow line.
The part most mystifying to me is their absence of self-preservation. A dump truck loaded with sand might be coming downhill, unbeknownst to them.
Literally to save 5-6 seconds before the curve straightens again.

I would expect someone who rode as you would say exactly what you said. Thousands of miles with no accidents....?

"...info on who he was driving for..."
I am not aware of that information.
They will likely fold as a company. Twenty injured and five fatalities?
My guess is big future lawsuits will far exceed whatever insurance coverage they carry.
