they were bitter enemies before Reagan was selected....the picking of Bush was out of the blue.....I remember that as if it was yesterday....
Bush....spit....
“Poppy Bush was not Reagan’s first choice for VP.”
I remember talk at the time that Bush was the standard “balance the ticket” ploy since Reagan was considered extreme by standard issue Republicans. It was a unify the party thing.
Just like McCain and Palin, but from the opposite direction.
“”Poppy Bush was not Reagan’s first choice for VP.”

I recall it as well - just a bit more humorously than most...
I was working at a cannery in Alaska (one season of work paid for a full year of college) and the line broke down — we all had to clock out for a few hours while the problem was fixed.
Went to the bunkhouse and started playing Cribbage with ‘a guy’ and we were listening to a static-filled Armed Forces Radio feed of the Rep Nat Convention for about 25 minutes...
It was announced that Gerald Ford would be the VP pick for a ‘Co-Presidency’ — the guy I was playing cribbage and I both exploded in absolute happiness!
(Look, we were very tired and had not had a day of less that 16 hours for three weeks)!
We both realized we were both hard core Republicans and have been friends since that day.
It was three days before we heard news about Bush.
You get giddy when you clock in for 121 1/2 hours in a singe week with a mandatory 1/2 hour off for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day...
