What is the purpose of an audit?

A full audit would look at everything with regard to the election (results and process). Some examples: It could look at signature matches on envelopes of mail in ballots and compare with voter signatures that are already on record (the rejection rate for mail in votes for this election is much lower than normal, even though a much larger number of people voted by mail). It could look at the number of registered voters and compare with number of votes cast (more votes cast in Detroit than registered voters in 2016). There are lots of things that a full audit could look at.
