The thing to always remember about that trial is that the ones who were only jailed were let out very quickly to bring the country together. It was the bad luck of the few that were hung that it happened so fast.

General Hancock got in a lot of trouble for not saving Mary Surratt from being hung. Great grandfather gave a lot of speeches throughout his life defending that decision.

He was brought in to run the investigation because he’d gotten the death penalty for the Southern Conspirators. They, too, were let off quickly.

That’s a lesson for us in that misdeed punishment is often a very temporary situation used to calm down the populace. The Democrats will survive whatever happens this time, as they did that time. Think cockroaches.
