When an altar with bones in a box were discovered two levels below the Vatican floor, along with some cloth material, a detailed scientific investigation was done. After much study the Church announced that given many pieces of evidence they believed the bones were those of St. Peter and declared the bones to be his remains. The bones were in a small box along with some purple cloth.
