OK, so this particular story didn’t come from the laptop. Seems to me then this is a red herring smokescreen story, i.e. they say “this story is unverified” as a means of explaining bass-akwardly why they have written off the other stories.

There is something to what you say: “ explaining bass-akwardly why they have written off the other stories.” though. The media has locked itself into keeping anything about Hunter out of “the narrative”. Well, except for anything sympathetic to Joe and Hunter they can invent.
