Avoiding prosecution for his crimes seems a more likely reason.

I had same thoughts. Well-spoken, business professional, noted Naval career. My question was why did he get in bed with these crooks — he “must” have seen early in relationship something was up. Do you think he might have been a plant? that entered my mind too.
I haven’t kept up with every single bit of info about Bobulinski’s info and involvement, and I have wondered from the beginning just how involved he was. Did he realize it was criminal right from the start? If not, why not? Was he involved in a sort of sting, or investigative manner, or was he just trying to make money? And finally realized it was a criminal venture and got out? When did he sever his ties with the Bitem criminal family enterprise?
